MAY 2015<\/strong>
\nIt\u2019s no secret the Netherlands <\/strong>are always worth a visit at least for birding. Especially
\nthe north seems to be blessed with migrants and sometimes one can get the impression,
\nthe countless dutch birders even find every vagrant<\/strong> may it ever so inconspicuous<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Therefore, no doubt a stopover in Holland travelling from the german North Sea to
\na Wildeye<\/a> Sound Recording Course was a pleasant duty.<\/p>\n

Like always Arnoud<\/a> was so kind to made a to-do list for my first stage.<\/p>\n

The lake Zuidlaardermeer<\/a> brought me my first opulent dawn chorus of the year
\n(can\u2019t help it – obviously I missed the whole spring while beeing offshore) and plenty

A few recently arrived Common Reed Warblers Acrocephalus scirpaceus<\/em> sang odd
\nsongs<\/strong>. I was lucky enough to see one of them carefully listening to his neighbor<\/strong> and
\nadapting to his song.
\nFollowing Donald Kroodsma<\/a>, this must have been a second calendar year<\/strong> bird

After this beautiful morning<\/strong> I found myself down on my luck<\/strong> – I dipped on an
\nIberian Chiffchaff Phylloscopus ibericus<\/em> (present since weeks) and a Buffelhead Duck
\nBucephala albeola<\/em> (o.k. non-dutch birders<\/strong> wouldn\u2019t seriously consider a Bufflehead
\nas a wild bird ;-)<\/p>\n

But the next day brought under Arnouds patronage my first ever Iberian Chiffchaff
\nsinging in a backyard. The friendly residents<\/strong> invited us into their garden to get
\ncloser to the bird.

A really special encounter<\/strong> were several families of Eurasian Spoonbills Platalea leucorodia<\/em>
\nnesting in trees right beside a highway<\/strong>, next to a well frequented petrol station.
\nWith our parabolas we led some attention to the colony and decided to went off.<\/p>\n
