October 2014<\/strong>
\n\u2026 is not refering to commercial bird sound records, but to autumn. Autumn<\/strong> isn\u2019t
\njust when I was born, what obviously made this season to something special to
\nme, it is the time of several major events in nature: bird migration<\/strong> to the wintering
\ngrounds, Red Deer rut, vocal activities by owls and some raptors during so called
\nautumn display and passerines like the European Robin or Black Redstart triggered
\nby roosting migrants<\/strong> in their feeding territories.<\/p>\n

And because these things happen within only a few months<\/strong> it\u2019s difficult to participate
\nin all these exciting events.<\/p>\n

The Dar\u00df<\/strong> peninsular in northeastern Germany has always been a perfect place to
\ntry it. The coastline sometimes provides thousands of migrating passerines<\/strong> on one
\nmorning or night, greater flocks of roosting waders, ducks and large gulls<\/strong> – nearby
\nfairly tame Red Deer<\/strong> in full display even by daylight.
\nThere are two protected areas where hunting is strictly prohibited and it is worth
\nthe experience to listen to the deers from just a few hundred meters or less.<\/p>\n

With the years the Dar\u00df at this time of year turned from a insider\u2019s tip<\/strong> to a well known
\ntop spot <\/strong>for so-called nature photographers<\/strong> – so nowadays it\u2019s getting a bit cosy on
\nwatchtowers and the permanent clicking and rattling DSLR cameras<\/strong> doesn\u2019t make
\nit a good place for sound recording.
\nIn the twilight of a misty morning one could mistake these locations with a WW2 film<\/strong>
\nset – all these well camouflaged guys behaving just like loyal NetGeoWild consumers.<\/p>\n

For a sound recordist there is another serious problem<\/strong> to deal with: wind.
\nDuring my last stay there was always windforce 5-6 with just one single calm day.
\nSince the wind protected forest is full of roosting Goldcrests, Paridae, Eurasian

Working offshore gives me the opportunity to visit places in northern Germany
\nbetween two survey trips.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s very interesting to study the bird migration from offshore<\/strong> and from onshore<\/strong>
\nthe next day or the other way around. It\u2019s a perfect opportunity to learn more about
\ndifferent migration strategies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Offshore we use common radar technology to see what we cannot see with naked
\neyes<\/strong> or hear with naked ears<\/strong>. To encounter migrants onshore the next day gives
\nyou an idea of what has been there in greater altitudes<\/strong> (up to 2500m).<\/p>\n
