\nA bit bored by birding<\/strong> and sound recording in always the same areas since years
\nI asked my friend Thomas<\/a> to show me nice spots near his hometown – especially
\nbecause it is\u00a0 just around the corner.<\/p>\n

A few days later I found myself back in an area, well known from my childhood
\nclose to the village where my grandmother lives. There are a few smaller ponds,

I had not expected too much, but was overwhelmed by the diversity and \u201cquality\u201d<\/strong>
\nof birdlife. Amongst the common ones there were: European Bee-eaters Merops
\napiaster<\/em>, a singing Barred Warbler Sylvia nisoria<\/em>, Eurasian Wrynecks Jynx torquilla<\/em>,
\nEuropean Penduline Tits Remiz pendulinus<\/em>, a Common Grasshopper Warbler
\nLocustella naevia<\/em>, a migrating flock of Goosanders Mergus merganser,<\/em> which is
\nnormally only a wintering species in that part of Germany, and a flock of Beared
\nReedlings Panurus biarmicus<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In late July and early August most birders fall in a kind of depression – breeding
\nseason comes to an end, most adult songbirds are hidden for post-breeding
\nmoult or to recover before migration.
\nBut this is the time to study both calls and early song stages<\/strong> – of adults warning
\nor giving social calls, of juveniles in nest, of fledged juveniles, sub- and plastic
\nsongs of first winter birds.
\nI don\u2019t know what makes people feel depressed at this time of year. To say it
\nmore provocative: to a birder with more than an aesthetic approach to wildlife,
\nthis is the best time of year!<\/strong><\/p>\n
