September 2013<\/strong>
\nIn September I went to the harbour town Poole<\/a> in South England.
\nAfter a unexpected offer from The sound approach<\/a> to reinforce the team
\nas a librarian at this year\u2019s Birdfair<\/a> I went to my first meeting with the guys.<\/p>\n

Before and after these exciting, instructive and delightful days<\/strong> I spent
\nsome days in the Netherlands with new friends mostly for birding with
\nArnoud<\/a> from The sound approach<\/a> and Dutch Birding<\/a>, respectively.<\/p>\n

Arnoud showed me birding sites around Amsterdam<\/strong> and we twitched
\namazing birds like: Long-legged Buzzard Buteo rufinus<\/em>, Western Rufous-tailed
\nScrub Robin Cercotrichas galactotes<\/em> and in addition my long desired first ever<\/strong>
\nYellow-browed Warbler Phylloscopus inornatus<\/em>.<\/p>\n

First we went to Texel,<\/strong><\/a> met up with photographer Ren\u00e9 Pop<\/a> in his house,
\nwhich was very funny. After that we headed furtheron for the yellow browed\u2019s,

Arend Wassink<\/strong> had found several YBW\u2019s in the morning and he guided us
\nto the most promising locations<\/strong>.
\nUnfortunately it was late and the birds became apparently silent<\/strong>. After a while
\nhappely Arend found two of them. A big thankyou for that!!!<\/strong><\/p>\n

It was great to meet him personally<\/strong>. In 2011 we had longer email conversations
\nabout Kazakhstan<\/strong> and I ceded him some sound recordings for his website

After getting the message<\/strong> of a present Long-legged Buzzard Buteo rufinus<\/em>
\nnear Rotterdam we found us back in the car heading for Arnouds dutch tick<\/strong>
\n– with full succes!
\nIn a nice area nearby were some YBW’s and in addition a Arctic Warbler
\nPhylloscopus borealis<\/em>. The noise from the harbour<\/strong> close-by and the present
\ncrowd discouraged me to make sound recordings<\/strong> there.<\/p>\n

Another famous place we visited were the Kennemerduinen<\/strong> near Sandpoort.
\nSound approach\u2019s Magnus<\/a> and Arnoud<\/a> spent a lot of time here recording
\nflight calls of migrants<\/strong> for the Dutch Birding\/The sound approach collaboration
\nCD Out of the blue<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately the noise from the harbour was blown through the whole area
\nand again I wasn\u2019t really motivated depending on the situation.
\nA roosting<\/strong> Grey plover Pluvialis squatarola<\/em> gave weak calls and a overflying
\nsongbird raised my attention<\/strong>. I thought it was a Serin Serinus serinus<\/em> but
\nRoy Slaterus<\/strong> (counting migrants for Trektellen<\/a> closeby) identified it
\nimmediately as a Lapland Longspur Calcarius lapponicus<\/em>.

Last but not least we spent some time with Peter Nuyten<\/strong>, physiotherapist,
\ndedicated birder<\/strong> and sound recordist<\/strong>. Furthermore he is a very keen
\nmechanic <\/strong>and microphon builder.<\/strong><\/p>\n
