September 2013<\/strong>
\nThe area around Leipzig is well know for it\u2019s large former brown coal opencast
\nmines<\/strong>. Most of them are recultivated, filled-up with water, planted or being used
\nfor freetime activities<\/strong> which getting out of hand<\/strong> now.<\/p>\n

In the north there is the so called Seelhausener See<\/strong> adjacent to the famous
\nlake Goitzsche<\/strong>.
\nThere is nothing unusual except from huge flocks of fishing Common Terns
\nSterna hirundo<\/em> which used to breed in a sandpit nearby. In winter it\u2019s a good
\nlocation to observe roosting arctic geese<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The early summer 2013<\/strong> brought the area heavy rains and subsequently
\na massive flood<\/strong>. The Seelhausener Lake burst its banks washed away a road
\nand after that the whole area was covered by sand<\/strong> – which was nice!<\/p>\n

The area attracted in the following months loads of birds and became a real
\nhotspot.<\/p>\n

Mathias<\/a> and I spent a lot of time there to check the flocks of gulls and cormorants<\/strong>
\nfor rings<\/strong>, capturing pictures and sound recordings<\/strong> of stunning breeding birds like
\nEuropean bee-eaters Merops apiaster<\/em> or Black Storks Ciconia nigra<\/strong> and migrating
\nsongbirds, terns and waders for our Birds-in-flight <\/a>website.<\/p>\n
