\nAs long as I can remember, the vastness of the Eurasian East<\/strong> has always fascinated me.
\nThus,\u00a0 I seized the opportunity to explore eastern Kazakhstan<\/strong> with a 4WD van in 2011
\n(April 1st – May 31st).<\/p>\n

This expedition seemed to be a real chance for making sound recordings of a pristine
\nnature<\/strong>, especially as I have always been frustrated by the anthropogenic noises
\npervading the landscapes of Central Europe<\/strong>. This expectation of a less noise polluted
\nenvironment should be widely fulfilled.<\/p>\n

I started my Journey in Almaty on April 1st. The 8350-km-long round trip called at:
\nBishkek (Kirgistan), Taraz, Qyzylorda, Turkistan, Tengiz, Astana, Kokshetau, Irtish,
\nSemey, Oeskemen, Almaty and the biozones of: Karatau Mountains, Syrdya Valley,
\nKyzylkum Desert, Tengiz Valley, Northern Kazakhstan, Irtish Valley, Altai Mountains,
\nLake Alakol\/Sasykol and Altyn-Emel Desert.<\/p>\n

I – Adaption<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kazakhstan, as well as other Central Asian countries, is well known for its biodiversity<\/strong>.
\nThe animals adapted to their extreme habitats <\/strong>may appear very appealing to Central
\nEurpoeans at first glance. For bioacousticians the question arises how this adaption

II – Taxonomy<\/strong><\/p>\n

Given the immense vastness of Kazakhstan, taxonomic questions<\/strong> have to be asked.
\nSome of them being answered differently by different persons, institutions or
\ncommittees.
\nQuestions regarding the status of, for instance, Steppe Gull <\/strong>Larus [fuscus] barabensis<\/strong><\/em>,
\nHume’s Whitethroat <\/strong>Sylvia [curruca] althaea<\/strong><\/em> or the Pedunline Tit complex<\/strong> might

Recent debates focused on the question whether eastern deer species<\/strong> are rather
\nrelated to those of the Western Palearctic<\/strong> or to those of the Neotropics<\/strong>. In the
\nnortheast of Kazakhstan<\/strong> I had the opportunity to listen to and record the Altai-Wapiti
\n<\/strong>Cervus canadensis sibiricus<\/strong><\/em> and Siberian Roe Deer <\/strong>Capreolus pygargus<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

III – Identification<\/strong><\/p>\n

Occasionally, Central Asian bird populations<\/strong> pass Central Europe<\/strong> when
\nmigrating towards their winterung grounds. This might cause trouble to some
\nEuropean ornithologists<\/strong> when it comes to identifying the calls of the migrating

III – Mysteries<\/strong><\/p>\n

Also sometimes loudly calling species<\/strong> refuse to reveal their presence. Consequently
\nthe protagonists of some of my recordings remained unidentified<\/strong> to me \u2013 at least
\non-site. Thanks to the help of Magnus Robb<\/a> and Eva Klebelsberg some of the cold
\ncases finally could be solved, after my return.
\nThis demonstrates the importance of well established networks and extensive
