September 2012<\/strong>
\nAt the beginning of July I went to England to participate in the Wildlife Sound
\nRecording Societies<\/a>‘\u00a0 annual meeting for the second time.
\nAfter that, trips to the famous Rutland Water Reserve<\/a> (yes, I saw the Ospreys)
\nand Norfolk’s Cley Marshes<\/a> should follow subsequently, mainly for birding.<\/p>\n

A. WSRS Annual General Meeting, Cottesmore<\/strong><\/p>\n

This year the Wildlife Sound Recording Society<\/a> had choose the Rutland Water
\nReserve<\/a> area to held it’ s annual meeting with following agenda:<\/p>\n

\u2022 Informal discussion\/internal matters
\n\u2022 Guest speaker: Jez Riley French<\/a>
\n\u2022 Sound quiz
\n\u2022 Replay of competition winning entries, and presentation of awards<\/p>\n

The micbuilder, sound and recording artist <\/strong>Jez Riley French<\/a> did a presentation
\nabout his work and played some stunning micro sound recordings made by his
\nown and related recordists like Peter Toll<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The annual sound quiz was prepared by Ian Todd. As the winner of last year’s
\nquiz I figured I would stand a good chance. But it contained a lot of orthoptera
\nsounds. Change of subject, please! ;-)<\/p>\n

Every year the Society runs two competitions<\/strong> with different categories.
\nThis year I achieved three placements<\/strong> including the Boughton Fieldcraft Award<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

It was great to meet some members (anew) – thanks a lot!<\/p>\n

B. Rutland Water Reserve<\/strong><\/p>\n

Since the WSRS AGM was situated near the reserve I decided to stay there for
\na few days. It was my first time at this famous area.<\/p>\n

Three things make the reserve to something special:
\n1. it is a great birding spot
\n2. a breeding pair of the reintroduced<\/strong> Osprey Pandion haliaetus<\/i>
\n3. the Rutland Bird Fair<\/a> – Europe\u00b4s biggest birding fair<\/p>\n

I was quite impressed by the reserves birding opportunities<\/strong> and it’ s highly
\nmotivated staff. Once more it made me really depressed to think about germany\u00b4s
\nshiftless environmental movement<\/strong>.
\nI highly recommend german environment agency bureaucrats and
\noldschool ornithologists to visit this or similar reserves to get an impression how
\nenvironmental conservation and freetime activities\/birding tourism can coexist easily.<\/p>\n

C. Norfolk<\/strong><\/p>\n

Following Ian Todds recommendation and an invitation by sound recordist and
\nmusician Peter Toll<\/a>, I headed further east to Norfolk<\/strong><\/a> subsequently.
\nSo I had three wonderful days full of birds, impressive landscape, sound recording,
\nnice talks with Peter and more impressions of the vital birding scene in England.<\/p>\n
