Earlier the month the artist duo<\/strong> FAMED<\/a> kindly invited me to give a talk at Nuremberg\u2019s<\/a>
\nart academy. Their chosen topic was ornithology and birding in times of war<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Some years ago Marcus Held<\/a> and I were preparing an artistic work, reflecting<\/strong> on
\nG\u00fcnter Niethammer\u2019s paper \u2018Beobachtungen \u00fcber die Vogelwelt von Auschwitz\u2019
\n(\u2018The Avifauna of Auschwitz\u2019) written in 1940.
\nAt the end, we did not exhibited it due to the rather unserious character of the exhibition<\/strong>,
\nwhich seemed not to be the appropriate setting<\/strong> to talk about bird monitoring in-between
\nthe atrocities in a german extermination camp.<\/p>\n

However, a talk would provide the right framework for it, and so I could dig deeper in
\nmore travel reports<\/strong> which were made during war missions, colonial raids, occupations
\nand the service in Auschwitz.<\/p>\n

I really enjoyed talking with FAMED and the students about various aspects of this
\ncomplex and difficult topic<\/strong>. Sincere thanks for that!<\/p>\n
