\nRecently I read a short notice by Yannick Dauby<\/a> concerning the amazing
\nsounds made by Tortoises<\/strong>. On this occasion I digged up a short recording
\nfrom a Russian Tortoise\u00a0Testudo horsfieldii<\/em> <\/i>uttering a threatening call<\/strong>.
\n<\/strong>Obviously my mammalian raptor like<\/strong> wind shield upsets him\/her.
\n
\n“Testudo horsfieldii<\/em> is currently listed as vulnerable<\/strong>\u00a0by the International Union
\nfor Conservation of Nature (IUCN): it \u00a0faces a high risk of extinction in the<\/strong>
\n wild in the medium-term future<\/strong>. \u00a0This classification was made on the basis
\nthat the Horsfield’s tortoise population is projected to suffer a\u00a0reduction of at
\nleast <\/strong>80%<\/strong> within the next three generations due to exploitation.<\/p>\n

Horsfield’s tortoises face threats from many quarters. In addition to collection
\nfor the pet trade<\/strong>, they also feature in the food market<\/strong> and have been known
\nto be used in traditional Chinese medicine<\/strong>. Both legal and illegal trade occurs
\nand collection can be so extreme as to eliminate tortoises from large areas<\/strong>.
\nOn top of this they are threatened by habitat loss due to agricultural inten-
\nsification<\/strong> and war refugee zones<\/strong> and face injury and mortality during desert
\ndevelopment, from farm machines, and on roads<\/strong>.
\nAs a result of these factors, both the range and population size of\u00a0Horsfield’s
