January 2012<\/strong>
\nHaving recorded the new years eve in the city center<\/strong> last year, I decided
\nto record the turn of the year this time in the countryside<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

During the last months I did several birding and sound recording trips in
\na area called Dr\u00f6mling – a nature reserve<\/strong> at the former intra-german border.
\nI expected a lot of roosting nordic geese and Whooper Swans Cygnus cygnus<\/em>
\n– and I should\u00b4t be disappointed.<\/p>\n

At an artificial shallow water area called Flachwasserzone Mannhausen<\/strong> were
\nabout 2000 geese<\/strong> and 40 swans<\/strong>. To my surprise 17 Bewick’s Swans
\nCygnus bewickii <\/em>were hidden among Whooper and Mute Swans Cygnus olor<\/em>.<\/p>\n

During the day I tried some different recording setups<\/strong> in the area.<\/p>\n

At 11pm I started the proper recording session. My aim was to document the
\nimpact of the fireworks on the bird\u00b4s (acoustic) behavior. Most of the birds
\nwere very nervous during the evening as an impact on firecrackers infrequent
\nbangs (similar to gun shots?).<\/p>\n

Simultaneously to the fireworks increasing intensity the waterfowl\u00b4s anxiety
\nincreased. The first flocks flew around an screamed in the darkness.
\nFortunately the fireworks stopped after half an hour, maybe depending on the
