July 2010<\/strong>
\nIn the mid of May 2010 I was part of a short birding-tour<\/strong> to Austria
\nand Hungary. We visited the famous Wienerwald<\/strong>, Neusiedler See
\n<\/strong>and the Fert\u00f6-Hans\u00e1g Nemzeti Park<\/strong> in northern Hungary<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

At the end of our six-day trip<\/strong> we had 140 bird species at our list but
\nI recorded only a few of them. The weather conditions were not the best
\n– a strong breeze<\/strong> was blowing nearly all time.<\/p>\n

Our mission to observe the famous Ural Owl<\/strong> Strix uralensis<\/em> in the
\ndepth of the Wienerwald<\/strong> failed. There are too few of them in that
\narea to guarantee an observation.
\nMany thanks to our guide Richard Zink<\/a> for showing us around and
\nintroducing the Ural Owl project!!<\/p>\n

But I was lucky anyway, the area inhabits some species I was curious to
\nwatch for a long time – first of all the beautiful Eurasian Hoopoe<\/strong>
\nUpupa epops<\/em>. This species is quite rare in Germany and especially in the
\neastern part they occur almost restricted to special protected or military

Near Illmitz<\/strong> (Neusiedler See) I had the chance to make recordings of
\na few waders<\/strong> from a short distance. Not far from the trail around the
\nlake Northern Lapwings <\/strong>Vanellus vanellus<\/em> and the Black-winged Stilts

In a hedge two birders found a singing Barred Warbler <\/strong>Sylvia nisoria<\/em>.
